What is Parley?
Parley for the Ocean is an organization that addresses major threats to our oceans and what we can do to protect them. Parley’s vision is “The power for change lies in the hands of the consumer – given we all have a choice – and the power to shape this new consumer mindset lies in the hands of the creative industries.”
Did you know that there are over five trillion pieces of plastic litter in our oceans with a truckload of plastic been added every minute!
In 2050 it is believed that there could be more plastic in our oceans than fish. Unlike natural materials, plastic is not biodegradable; it breaks down into even smaller pieces, which animals mistake for food. This means that if our sea life is regularly consuming plastic, then we are as well.
However, it is not too late to change. Recycling is the first step in breaking the cycle. We must start to rethink and reinvent to eventually eliminate plastic from our everyday lives. Everyone can do this if we work together to change our attitudes and habits to protect our oceans.
One of the ways Parley has decided to tackle this problem by choosing to work alongside many different creators like artists, fashion designers, journalists, architects, and many more to work together to develop a useful way to synchronise humankind’s economic ecosystem.
Since the organisation has been created, they have created a changing process that’s already happening, they quote “No other big movement in the history of humankind has developed faster than the environmental cause.”
adidas X Parley: The new standard for eco-innovation
Parley for the Ocean have teamed up with many different creators for a project to help within this movement. adidas x Parley have been working together for the past five years to create collections that will help to protect the oceans.
Parley Ocean Plastic is better for oceans because it is created from upcycled marine plastic waste collected from remote islands, beaches, and coastal communities. They use it as a replacement for virgin plastic to make all adidas x Parley high-performance sportswear. Once they collect the plastic waste, they send it off to the Parley supply chain partners. It is here where it will be shredded and reworked to become high-performance polyester yarn, otherwise known as Parley Ocean Plastic. This will then be used to create their collection with adidas.
In the adidas x Parley collection, you can shop a range of different clothes from sportswear, swimming costumes and shoes.
One of the Parley range collections is the Ultraboost X shoe which has been included in the adidas by Stella McCartney Range. This has been carefully designed to bring out the best performance and to reflect the female foot’s natural form while making a difference to the planet.
“I strongly believe in making clothing that is ethically created and built to last, and this is an ideology I channel into every single piece I design.”Stella McCartney
How can you do your part?
There are lots of different changes you can make in your life, to help make a big difference in the fight to protect our oceans. These can be by using a reusable water bottle, taking your own bag to the shops, and saying no to plastic straws when ordering a drink. Instead of plastic straws, you can purchase your own reusable straw instead.
To purchase most of these items, you can visit Parley’s own store, where you can find many products from reusable bags to clothing items that have been designed to support projects that help protect our oceans. All the bags from the store are made using Parley ocean plastic, and if you purchase their product, the funds from it can help clean up 20 pounds of marine plastic waste, which can be used to make more products.
It’s important to support this movement as much as we can because all the products purchased from their site can be used to protect the oceans and end marine plastic pollution. The money purchased from these items can then be used to help fund clean-ups and a plastic interception. As well as to educate people, communicate their message, help with material science and eco-innovation.
