Corona Chaos: Make or Break for the Fashion Industry?
In a world full of previous distrust from governments during elections, specifically the Brexit election which saw the Leave.EU campaign claim that we send £350 million a week to the EU, and that we should spend that money on the NHS. A statement which was later addressed by government officials as a misrepresented statement, we should take the representation of the pandemic from the politicians and mainstream media with a hint of skepticism – but can we deny that this is an infection affecting people globally? Whether we are being distorted or disillusioned, this infection has reached all corners of the globe and seems to be creeping up closer to…

Fashion and the global crisis – will coronavirus kickstart sustainability?
As coronavirus took hold and the world changed, many worried about income, health and the changes being put into place. Lockdown proposed a period of uncertainty, but as time went on, we adapted and responded to the changes, and it soon became apparent there are some advantages to humans being less active in the world. The Environment As businesses were closed, jobs were postponed and socialising was cut to an all-time minimum, the public faced limitations, but the environment began to thrive. From cleaner air to liberated wildlife, the advantages to the world around us became unmissable. Within a couple of weeks of modern life being postponed, animals began appearing,…

Fashion and the global crisis -what happens now?
Since the 24th of March of this year, the United Kingdom has been living in times that will come to be known as alien in the history books. The country, since this date, has issued an immediate lockdown of all ‘non- essential’ travel, and gatherings, with shops and food venues amongst those affected. But what about our fashion world? What happens now? Stay at home fashion The pressure to have a perfect lockdown outfit is real, and with online influencers selling their idea of the perfect fit, it is hard to ignore. It would be almost unreasonable to suggest that those who have been affected the most by these of…

Our relationship with fashion: before, during, and after a pandemic
Even in our wildest dreams, a global pandemic was not something most of us imagined happening, especially on this scale. But here we are, learning throughout this experience together. Our daily lives have been totally altered. We are disassociated from many things that we were accustomed to or even dependent on. With all of these changes, it’s a great time to think about what our routine means to us. Retrospectively thinking, how did our daily lives shape our identity? And how will we adapt to the changes we have been experiencing? The role of fashion in our daily lives These thoughts can be applied to many things, from working habits,…

The biggest trend of S/S20
As our social media feeds and TV screens are flooded with continuous news cycles of the coronavirus pandemic it can be hard to escape. Beginning at the tale end of 2019 the COVID-19 outbreak has been all too consuming. Originating in China, COVID-19 is a flu- like virus which attacks the airways and lungs causing the infected to contract a continuous cough, have a high fever and in some – more severe – cases can cause difficulties when breathing. As a high number of civilians who have contracted the virus go on to need medical care, health services and hospitals across the world are beginning to struggle. This new virus…

The global impact of COVID-19 on the fashion industry
As the COVID-19 global crisis unfolded, I watched in horror as many of the major fashion brands and retailers, without warning, cancelled orders and delayed payments to their suppliers and factories. This was because of the slowdown in consumption of their clothing, due to the closure of their retail stores. In many cases, this meant that the factories could not pay their workers for work that they had already carried out. Over 1 million garment workers in Bangladesh have lost their jobs or been temporarily suspended from work, due to these order cancellations and the failure of buyers to pay for cancelled orders. Many of these workers have been sent home…

Fashion’s future: during difficult times and post-pandemic
There is very little break from the complete coverage of coronavirus across the news currently. A lot of fear for public health is still hanging (and quite rightly so) but a lot of perspective is starting to come to light. People are looking more at their values and what matters to them. With people staying home to help keep the population safe, this is of course having an impact on the local and global fashion industry. Of course, the news closer to home for many of us in the UK will be the concern around fashion retail workers and job uncertainty (regardless of the 80% government initiative). However, as usual,…

How the global pandemic will affect the fashion industry
The global pandemic of COVID-19 has brought the world to a standstill, with numerous countries in lockdown to slow the spread of the disease. While it is difficult to escape the news and panic surrounding this, businesses like the fashion industry can provide some escapism from the new reality. However, this current situation highlights how insignificant the latest trends can be. This is having a huge effect on the industry as people are turning to news articles rather than fashion blogs. Many companies have been forced to close for safety reasons and economic loss. With everyone staying indoors as advised by the government, retail therapy is out of the question…

COVID-19: the impact on the fashion world
COVID-19 has hit the world population hard and has knocked the economy drastically. The mainstream media is trying to provide the most relevant and recent information, confirming that the UK’s total cases are rising steadily each day. Although we are used to internet trolls and are wary of online scams, we undoubtedly have to trust the severity of the pandemic and understand the government’s decisions for lockdowns and the immediate closure of nonessential businesses. But just how impacted will the fashion industry be? Global impact We are witnessing a domino effect with the virus, not only by spreading it, but with travel restrictions and the shutdown of several countries across…
