Are Disabilities Ignored in the Fashion Industry?

    November 20, 2020 /

Is the Industry Doing Enough to Cater for Those with Disabilities Disabilities seem to be ignored in the fashion industry due to crammed shops, an absence of disabled people on catwalks, and a lack of inclusive products. Sporting a complete lack of representation and accessibility for people with disabilities. Making up 20% of the population, the fashion industry severely lacks the catering for that group of people. Requiring more inclusivity from products to shop lay outs. Disabled shoppers are far from a niche market: nearly one in five people in England and Wales are disabled – presenting a market worth £249 billion. Although the fashion industry is moving in the right…

Cultural Appropriation: Diversity in Fashion isn’t a Trend

    September 21, 2020 /

Diversity shouldn’t be a fashion trend; the fashion industry needs to be diverse. Fashion lacks diversity in many ways. Maybe one brand limits its clothing to ‘one size fits all’ (even though we all know it doesn’t). Or perhaps the marketing for a new collection underrepresents ethnic minority groups or has an offensive campaign that exhibits cultural appropriation. On a regular basis, we can see the exclusivity of fashion. Yet we all wear clothes. So there shouldn’t be barriers preventing any individual from wearing what they want when they want. This said, in recent years the fashion industry has slowly moved towards more diversity in models, marketing and its attempt…

Is ‘size 0’ really what you think it is?

    September 8, 2020 /

Size 4 in the UK, size 32 in France or size 44 in Korea – all numbers are supposedly size 0 for a women’s dress size, according to this sizing chart. But, can we trust these measurements? Or are they altered so we fit into larger clothes labelled with our ideal size, to secure a purchase? 2017 saw France ban size-zero models from top fashion houses. Plus-sized models are finally getting some well-deserved recognition on top runways and clothing sites. However, the question I’m asking is do brands and designers still seek size 0 models when launching a new collection? Or are they now looking for more diverse models to…

The inclusivity and diversity of fashion brands in this world

    September 4, 2020 /

In every walk of life importance should be placed on increasing the level of diversity and inclusivity in this world. Sadly, that is not the case in many aspects but it has become apparent that some fashion brands are making it a reality. We should not only identify them, but also celebrate them. TomboyX To think of an inclusive and diverse fashion brand, look no further than TomboyX, as the company has the goal to create an underwear range for everybody and anybody. The development of a gender-neutral range has seen sizes range from XS to 4XL for as little as £15. Fran Dunaway and Naomi Gonzalez, partners in life…

Will Our Lives Ever Be Not Filtered?

    June 25, 2020 /

Do fashion brands and magazines think about the impact of using the same size models? Do they consider the effect this has upon teenagers and young adults? Why is Photoshop used to remove natural imperfections that make us who we are? In almost all magazines there is some sort of diet recommendations for those wishing to lose weight, however, do you see many about gaining weight? Social media and photoshopping ‘imperfections’ There are many teenagers/young adults who aspire to look like Victoria’s Secret models, the models for fashion brands or more commonly nowadays social media influencers. Not all are aware models bodies undergo Photoshop to be made as the ‘perfect’…

Learn how to embrace yourself and be body positive

    June 24, 2020 /

Through this article I want to share more about how we can use fashion to cultivate a positive body image and learn to be proud and embrace your own skin (if you don’t already). This issue is not confined to women, I will also touch more on the topic of men and their body image and share some tips we can all implement to spread more body positivity. We are all unique, let’s celebrate our uniqueness. Enjoy! Body image In 2019, one in five UK adults felt shame because of their body image. For me, that is quite troubling. Body image is how we think and feel about ourselves physically,…
