No Secret that Victoria’s Secret Was Desperate for a Change

    September 25, 2020 /

Calling for Change We live in challenging times when almost everything is being questioned and asked for change. It does not matter whether we look at politics, sport or simply just the way of living, everything seems to be facing an important question. Is this enough? Are we doing it right? Not even the fashion industry got spared when it comes to big changes. Maybe it is because fashion is something that is more or less accompanying us for our whole life. Some might not realise that, but fashion and lifestyle are affecting the way others see us as a person, the way the society is accepting us. Yes, it…

Valentina Sampaio: The Latest SI Swimsuit “Rookie”

    September 23, 2020 /

Making history Valentina Sampaio is the 23-year-old model creating waves with her ground-breaking feature in the 2020 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. The Brazilian trailblazer has become the first transgender woman to appear in the magazine since its first edition in 1964. Sampaio, who has become the latest swimsuit “rookie” revealed for 2020, marks a turning point for the transgender community and Sports Illustrated. Whilst her Vogue Paris cover in 2017 was her first personal milestone, Sampaio has continued to succeed. In addition, in 2019, she became the first transgender model to walk in the Victoria’s Secret fashion show. Another huge breakthrough in a traditionally exclusive industry that is often set…

The level of body image diversity in fashion

    June 16, 2020 /

Naivety is a prominent mentality in modern society and media when it comes to the impact of body image. As the media bombard the public with advertisements or articles that convey the perfect figure – a body image that the majority of people do not see when they look in the mirror each day. The size discrimination of fashion shows Petite, tall and plus-size are titles of how modern society categorises a person’s physical size. But does the size of a person restrict their opportunities? There is a level of exclusivity and judgement when it comes to evaluating body image. An exclusivity which controversially transfers to the modelling sector. As…

    Transgender representation in fashion

    February 11, 2020 /

The transgender community is one of many that suffers a lack of representation in the fashion industry. The good news is that times are changing. 2019 saw the first casting of openly transgender model, Valentina Sampaio by industry giant, Victoria’s Secret, just one year after British Vogue featured it’s first transgender woman, Paris Lees in their February 2018 edition. These turning points represent a long-awaited shift in inclusivity of the trans community, but aside from these headline events, how inclusive really is fashion? In honour of LGBTQ+ History Month, Mindless Mag investigates the truth behind the headlines.  Times are changing Over the past couple of decades, the fashion industry has…

Will gender neutral fashion ever truly be mainstream?

    February 7, 2020 /

Gender neutral clothing is a movement that is slowly being absorbed into mainstream fashion labels, as more information is discovered and revealed in terms of gender fluidity. But will it ever become the norm? With the release of Zara and H&M’s gender neutral clothing lines we see a shift in marketing from some of the world’s largest clothing conglomerates. As acceptance and equality continues to grow we could be steadily approaching a tipping point in the world of fashion. Odd Sizing The concept of male and female clothing, although primarily based around sizing, is an odd one. In many cases you are able to find the same piece of clothing…
